More Information

Vocalise (Élégie) for Voice and Piano is an arrangement of part of Gabriel Fauré’s "Élégie" for Cello and Piano. I thought that the beautifully sorrowful melody of the first section of this piece would sound equally beautiful when sung, however the rest of the piece is too idiomatic for the cello to work well for the voice, so I created my own ending to make this section stand on its own. I also briefly extended the climax of this section, which felt natural to me.

Premiered Jan 12, 2025 at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, Brattleboro, VT, by Diane Southard-soprano and Keane Southard-piano.
