Womb of Darkness was originally composed in 2025 for the choir of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church (Brattleboro, VT), where I have been Director of Music since 2023, for performance at our annual Advent Lessons and Carols service. The text is an Advent prayer written by St. Michael’s Assistant Priest, and my friend, adwoa Wilson:
O God who surrounded yourself in the wilderness with clouds and deep darkness, who knit your incarnate Son in the dark warmth of Mary’s womb: Make the darkness of this evening become for us a creative, healing, and courageous time, in whose silence we notice you whispering the answers our world’s wilderness most needs to hear. Amen.
This version for organ was completed in January 2026.
