This arrangement of Béla Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances for Violin and Orchestra was created in October and November 2025. Commissioned by Midori for her Orchestra Residencies Program, it was arranged for her to perform with beginning and intermediate level youth orchestras. This arrangement uses the violin part exactly as arranged by Zoltán Székely in his 1926 version for violin and piano, whereas the orchestra parts are based on Bartók’s original piano version from 1915 and his own orchestration for small orchestra from 1917.
The woodwind, brass, and percussion parts are optional—this work may be performed by string orchestra only. It may also be performed with full forces but with some of the woodwind, brass, and percussion parts omitted according to the availability of each orchestra (such as leaving out Trumpet 4, Horn 3, Bass Drum, Bassoon, Oboes, etc.) There are also ossia parts in the strings in some of the movements for players that are at a more intermediate level, as well as a very easy optional violin part in the first and final movements.
